With rapid growth, such as in the media industry, comes new and innovative operational processes. However sometimes, opting for faster and easier methods may harm publications more than it benefits them. Below are two ways for publications to improve the public's trust in them.
Human Writing Over Generative AI
Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are convenient and save time in writing. However, it is a non-negotiable for any ethical publication to be transparent about using such tools. The downside, however, is that people see news reports that are marked as AI-generated as less trustworthy than human-written ones.
This leaves publications that use AI with limited options: Either declare the use of AI and be seen as less trustworthy, or act unethically and severely harm their reputation.
The best route to follow is therefore to rely on human writing and produce authentic journalism.
Accuracy Over Speed
Today, with most publications being mainly digital, getting the scoop is much more competitive than before. Many publications now prioritise early publication, causing them to publish stories that are still in the early stages of development or writing that have not undergone proper quality control.
Publishing uninformative, low-quality work for the sake of being first, does more harm than good. Publications that continue to prioritise accuracy over speed can better retain the trust of the public.
